The
Challenge

Why youth are the missing link in disaster management strategies.

"Young people are often portrayed merely as passive victims of disasters, despite being the most agile and connected demographic in their communities."

Traditional disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies frequently exclude youth from decision-making processes. This oversight leaves a significant portion of the population unprepared and anxious when crises strike.

person_off Systemic exclusion from policy

Without targeted training, schools and youth centers lack the practical frameworks to teach survival skills or community organization, leading to chaos rather than coordinated action during emergencies.

Methodology

Our Approach

A participatory framework designed to shift youth from beneficiaries to active leaders in resilience.

01

Co-Created Curriculum

We partnered with local educators and student bodies to design a training module that is culturally relevant and accessible.

Human-Centered Localized
02

Simulation Training

Moving beyond theory, students engage in gamified disaster simulations to test decision-making under pressure.

Gamification Real-world Drills
03

Leadership Mentoring

Connecting high-potential youth with experienced humanitarian professionals to build long-term career pathways.

Network Career Path

Educational Toolkit

We equip schools with a digital and physical suite of tools to maintain readiness long after the initial training concludes.

"My opportunity as a yDRL teaching fellow has taught me that no man is an island. From the experiences of children living in the refugee settlements to the Teaching Fellows, teamwork really makes the dream work."

Next Steps

The yDRL pilot has proven the immense value of youth integration in disaster planning. We are now scaling to Phase 2: National Rollout, aiming to integrate the curriculum into the standard national education policy.

Our roadmap also includes the launch of a dedicated mobile app to connect youth leaders across different districts for real-time information sharing.
